- Who needs a freshwater fishing license. Anyone 15 years of age or older needs a Rhode Island recreational freshwater fishing license. Under 15 needs none.
- Trout stamp exemptions. No trout stamp is needed for anglers under 15, RI residents over 65, people with 100% disability, landowners and their family fishing where they live, trout taken from a lake or pond shared with a neighboring state, or privately-owned trout from private ponds.
- Free fishing weekend. On the first full weekend of May every year, nobody, resident or out-of-state, needs a freshwater fishing license or a trout conservation stamp.
- Reciprocal border waters (CT and MA). A Rhode Island license is honored on a short, named list of shared border waters only: Beach Pond, Killingly Pond, Hazard Pond, and Peck Pond with Connecticut, and Wallum Lake with Massachusetts. Anywhere else across the line you need that state's own license.
